How to Help Your Child Adjust to Day Care
Separation can be very difficult for toddlers, and for parents too! Drop-off time can be a real struggle, but there are some ways to make this time easier for everyone, and teach your child to be excited about going to day care!
A few things you can do to help your son or daughter adjust to day care according to Parents.com are:
- “Let your child get familiar with other children in the center by planning a playgroup or playdate on the weekends.
- Talk with your child about his or her feelings.
- Avoid big changes at home, such as getting a new pet, having visitors, starting potty training, switching to a big bed, or redecorating your child’s room.
- Let your child bring a transitional object like a lovey, pacifier, blanket, or stuffed animal.
- Give your child a book of family photos to take with him or her.
- Always say goodbye. Never sneak away from your child!
- Once you do say goodbye, leave right away.”
Of course, some of these things are easier said than done! We know how it feels when you leave and you can hear your child crying, or getting upset as you go. At Little Angels, we do our best to help all the children adjust to being away from their parents or guardians during the day.
